Why having a Will is important

As many of you are aware there has unfortunately been a spate of celebrities who have recently died, including much loved figures such as Terry Wogan, David Bowie and Alan Rickman. Their deaths have come as a shock to many as it often feels like the celebrities in our lives are fixed points that go on forever. Certainly, Comic Relief and the Eurovision Song Contest will feel very different in years to come without the familiar tones of Sir Terry in the background. For many, the death of David Bowie has robbed them of their favourite musician and cultural icon. In addition, for those of a certain age Alan Rickman will forever be associated with the Harry Potter series and his leading role as Severus Snape.

Unfortunately, death is a fact of life, which everybody will have to deal with at some point in their lives. A common factor between Terry, David and Alan is that they all had Wills to cover their wishes when they died. They all understood the importance of ensuring their affairs were looked after properly. A valid Will can ensure that a person’s affairs are dealt with in accordance with their wishes even when they have the most complicated set of affairs. A Will can really help in ensuring that a person’s estate is dealt with smoothly. It is also true that only roughly 40% of the population of the UK has a valid Will that covers their wishes and ensures that their affairs are dealt with properly when they have passed away. For the 40% of the population who do have a Will, it is also important that these are regularly reviewed, at least every three to five years.
