Frequently Asked Questions

As soon as you become aware that the police (or another organisation) are investigating you, or if you believe that you may have committed a crime, you need to call us. We can give you advice, represent your interests and make sure your rights are protected. We will also represent you in Court if it is neccesary.

It is your legal right to be offered free legal advice from a solicitor. As soon as you arrive at the Police Station you should ask the Custody Sergeant to contact Alsters Kelley Solicitors in order that we can attend to represent you. One of our solicitors will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This depends on two things. Firstly, whether you are financially eligible. If you have disposable income, or capital, above a certain amount you may not be eligible for legal aid. Secondly it depends on how serious the case is. For very minor criminal offences you are unlikely to be granted legal aid unless there are other circumstances which would entitle you to get legal aid.

As soon as you receive a summons you should contact us immediately to give us the details of your scheduled court appearance. Motoring law can be complicated and the prosecution will usually be represented by an experienced prosecutor. It therefore makes sense to have an experienced lawyer fighting your corner. We will give you some initial advice over the telephone and make the necessary arrangements to represent you in Court.

An endorsement stays on your driving licence for four years from the date of conviction. However, there are three offences where there is an exception. For drinking/drugs and driving, causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs and causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen, the offences will remain on your record for 11 years from the date of conviction.

Please call 02477 710 241 to speak to a member of the team and to make an appointment with one of our criminal lawyers at any of our six offices.

What our clients think

Continue doing what you do. Sunil was really helpful and understanding, and took a lot of stress off me when at the Police stations.

Mr S Prince, July 2024, Criminal Litigation & Motoring Offences

I was very happy with the service provided by my Solicitor, namely Nicola Gabriel, and would recommend Alsters Kelley Solicitors to others and use them again if needed.

S Grant, April 2024, Criminal Litigation & Motoring Offences

I would not hesitate to recommend this firm to anyone in need of a quality legal representation. I found each member of the team dealt with from administration, para legal to head of the legal department very professional in the way they conducted their business. Communication was excellent I was briefed in detail at each stage of the process. Not being familiar with the legal process they ensured I was kept a breast and guided through the entire process in a manner I was able to understand. The billing process was clear and accurate. The commitment and work ethic, the knowledge of the subject and process was clear to see at all levels. Mine was a most complex case and I would recommend this team to anyone in need of a legal firm. A special mention for Jas Thiara. Her knowledge of the law, process and the West Midlands legal scene was clear to see. Strategy Every call Jas made proved to be the correct one, her decisions of which path to take and which part of the case to concentrate on was the correct call, every time.

I want to say thank you to Mrs Jas Thiara, the senior associate and head of the department for the prompt response and support to my family on that one blessed evening when it was nearly time for the end of the day but time was still devoted to hearing my request.

And to you Selina for the immediate take over and responses by email and paperwork and to Mr Sunil Jagatia, we appreciate your time and mitigations, advice and support throughout the case.

AB, February 2024, Criminal Litigation & Motoring Offences

I was introduced to Alsters Kelley whilst in Police Custody in a most bizarre and unpleasant set of circumstances, following a serious but false criminal allegation.

The solicitor was Jas Thiara.
Jas was extremely good, professional and efficient.

The best bit of advice she gave me was to play back everything I had told her, not to miss out anything. I’m very glad that I did, because everything I told the police it turned out later they were already aware of, and it totally vindicated my position.
Jas was quite assertive when she needed to be, which did cut down the interview time on more than one occasion.

Her follow-up synopsis of the situation at that early stage gave me some much needed confidence that there was no case against me, at times like this that is a life-saver. She gave me some other very valuable insights that were an enormous help at a desperately grim time – bear in mind I have never broken a law in my life, so a night in a police cell and the process that followed was a massively shocking time.

At a time of crisis Jas was the sort of person I knew I needed to professionally represent me, and that’s what this is about. Now that I have come out of the ordeal rightfully cleared, I’m more than happy to give my full endorsement to Alsters Kelley for their thorough professionalism. Five stars from me.

W, December 2023, Criminal Litigation & Motoring Offences

Thank you again for your support Nicky. It was reassuring to be represented by you personally. I’ve trusted you since I was a child, you’ve never once let me down and always had my best interests at heart, even at my lowest point in life. It was great to see you again.
