Valentine’s Day the 14th February, is the day we celebrate our feelings of affection for our special ‘Valentine’. It is a tradition that boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives celebrate this special day with the exchange of cards and special romantic gifts. The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia.
However not everyone will be celebrating Valentine’s Day, and whilst Valentine’s Day has its traditions, people who are separating or thinking of separating will not be troubling the High Street for flowers and cards this year.
“Crimson in card shops and heart-shaped chocolate boxes turn the stomach when you’ve just split up,” says Jane Robey, Chief Executive of National Family Mediation (NFM). “For separating couples February 14th isn’t hearts and roses, but a bitter reminder of how they feel towards their ex.”
