The rise of later life divorce

While overall UK divorce rates have fallen, older age groups are the clear exception. While the 40-44 age bracket sees the highest number of divorces, the over-50s are the only group with divorce rates that are consistently rising.

Divorce age rising

The average age of divorce is rising, largely driven by a surge in divorce among people over 50, these now account for roughly 36% of all divorces. But this trend hasn’t happened over night and is not exclusive to the UK. There are a number of reasons for the rise in what has become known as “silver divorce”.

Many experts believe that this trend reflects a raft of reasons. These include longer life expectancies, shifting societal expectations – less stigma, increased financial independence, empty nest syndrome, better health, caring for elderly parents, menopause, retirement and a desire for greater personal fulfilment.

Well-thought out

Divorce is rarely an impulsive decision, and all the more so in later life. In most instances, it is considered, deliberate, rational and often a slow process. Many older  divorcers cite unmet needs, a gradual sense of having outgrown the relationship and use the phrase “life is too short” to illustrate the fact that they want to spend their remaining years happier and more fulfilled than they are currently.

According to the Office of National Statistics, in 1990, couples aged 50 and older accounted for less than 10% of all divorces. Today that figure has risen to around 36%. For those over 65, the numbers are even more pronounced with divorce rates for women in this age bracket rising by almost 40% over the last two decades. By 2037, it is estimated that one in 10 people divorcing will be over 60.

There is also the issue of dividing pensions, updating retirement/estate planning, divesting of the family home (finding another one or two), health and care needs, navigating strained relationships with adult children and general emotional upheaval.”
