Family Mediation Voucher Scheme will continue for the 2026-27 financial year

The scheme, which began in 2021, provides a contribution of up to £500 per case towards mediation costs. It is designed to support eligible families to help with the costs of mediation to resolve their family law disputes, particularly those involving child arrangements, including custody, and related financial issues.

Avoid the stress and time delay of a family court

The Family Mediation Voucher Scheme is administered by the Family Mediation Council, and is aimed at encouraging mediation, reducing legal costs, avoiding the stress of courtroom conflict and alleviating the current pressure on family courts. Whilst the voucher cannot be used to pay for the initial MIAM meeting itself, or for hiring solicitors, court fees, or any legal services, it can be used to pay for joint mediation sessions that occur after an initial assessment.

Helen Anthony, CEO of The Family Mediation Council (FMC), said. “Since 2021, 51,000 families have benefitted from the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme. Its continuation is important, as it will ensure that many more families on low incomes are able to access mediation to help them resolve their disputes in the year ahead. Recent data shows that around two thirds of families using the vouchers have reached a full or partial settlement, without needing to go to court.
