Vaginal Mesh

It was reported by BBC News that a health watchdog had suggested controversial vaginal mesh implants should be offered again on the NHS. Use of vaginal mesh was halted across the UK amid safety concerns.

However, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence said the ‘limited evidence’ meant ‘the true prevalence of long-term complications following surgery with mesh is unknown’.

The BBC interviewed, Mel Semple, who had a vaginal mesh fitted on the advice of her doctor after experiencing mild urinary incontinence. However, within weeks of the procedure her daily life was inhibited by extreme pain. Her urinary incontinence was much worse and she started to suffer from bladder infections. This led to her avoiding leaving her home and she became very isolated.

A survey by the Sling the Mesh campaign group suggested a third of women fitted with vaginal mesh now have fibromyalgia, a debilitating chronic pain condition. This is way above the national average. Furthermore, one in 20 women who responded to a survey by the Sling the Mesh campaign group said they had attempted suicide, with many more having suicidal thoughts.
