Review into GOSH surgeon Yaser Jabbar is widened to four more hospitals

A message on GOSH’s website: ‘We are aware that some Gosh patients have also been treated by this surgeon at other hospitals in the UK. As we conduct the review, we want to be sure that we are looking at all the care that was provided by the surgeon. To do this we are working with the other four hospitals we know this surgeon worked at. It’s essential we look at all the care that he provided. We need full transparency with regards to what happened at every hospital he worked at, and every treatment on every patient. To this end, we want these hospitals to look carefully into their own cases and carry out any necessary independent reviews.”

In total Yaser Jabbar had 721 under his care. To date 39 cases reviewed by independent experts and 22 children were found to have come to some degree of harm, including 13 deemed to have come to ‘severe harm’. These include one child who had to have a leg amputated, another who may soon have to have a limb amputated. Whilst the review has found that many other patients have been left with legs at different lengths, sometimes by as much as 20cm and many others are left living with chronic pain.

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) commissioned a report by the Royal College of Surgeons which was handed in a year ago. But it has only been released this week to some of the families. However, whilst the report concludes that some “children had incorrect and unsuitable orthopaedic surgery under Mr Jabbar’s care at GOSH, it is heavily redacted and does not go far enough to providing the answers families urgently need in order to understand what has happened to their children.
