The client was 16 years old when he was admitted to hospital with symptoms of infection caused by Group B Streptococcus. He developed septicaemia and meningitis and there was a delay in treating him with antibiotics. Sadly, this resulted in a brain injury, leaving him with severe behavioural problems, clumsy and poor coordination. He also has severe learning problems and is dependent on others for all elements of daily living in addition to suffering from epilepsy.
Public Funding (formally known as Legal Aid) was obtained to allow detailed investigations to proceed, which led to an admission of liability from the Trust in that they failed to treat the client in a timely manner. He was awarded compensation which allowed the family to purchase a suitable property for him and indeed, to pay for the adaptations and a care package.
