In recent weeks, the media has highlighted how rapidly the unregulated UK cosmetics injectables industry is growing, currently predicted to reach £11.7 billion by 2026.
Currently there is no legislation in the UK as to who can administer cosmetic surgery injections such as Botox and a new study from University College London (UCL) suggests that more than two thirds of people administering these treatments are not qualified medical doctors.
The UK Government is now planning to update the policy on injectables and a public consultation on the industry is due to start this month – August 2023. It is thought that following any recommendations from the consultation that changes to the Medical Act may be made in 2024.
Also hitting the headlines have been stories of people going abroad for various plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures including dental surgery, weight loss procedures, tummy tucks, liposuction and breast surgery but then finding that when they return they need further treatment from the NHS because of complications with their procedures or where there may have been a lack of after care and/or advice.
