The Government has now issued advice on home moving during the coronavirus outbreak.
The good news is that from 13th May 2020 people who wish to move home can do so. The guidance sets out to ensures that moving can happen safely.
It covers advice for estate agents, surveyors, removal firms and solicitors.
What if I am vulnerable or shielding?
For those who are vulnerable or shielding you should make sure that all professional advisors know about your status. There may be additional steps that they wish to take to further protect you.
What if I am self-isolating or have tested positive for coronavirus?
It is not appropriate to move if you risk transmitting the virus. You should not move in these circumstances or undertake property viewings. If it is essential to move and you are in this category Public Health England will provide advice.
What about finding a new home?
The process of finding a new home and moving is likely to be different as it is important to minimise risking the spread of the virus.
Initial viewings are likely to be virtual where possible. Physical viewings should be limited to members of the same household and only those who absolutely have to be there. You will need to take extra care if small children attend – try to keep them from touching surfaces and ensure they wash their hands regularly. Open viewings should not take place.
Owners should leave the property while a viewing takes place. Leave your internal doors open and ensure that door handles and surfaces are cleaned.
What about moving to a new home?
Once the conveyancing has been completed you will be ready to move. Expect to be flexible and be prepared to delay moves if necessary, for example if someone becomes ill with the virus.
When you move you should do as much of the packing as possible yourselves. Ensure that you speak to your removal firm in advance giving them as much notice as possible. It is advised that you clean your belongings before they are handled by others such as removal firms.
Even though this may seem hard, everyone must follow social distancing measures.
