With all surgery comes a risk. Most operations are performed successfully with no adverse outcomes. However, sometimes things go wrong and patients can suffer injuries as a result of surgery that is not performed correctly or to a reasonable standard.

Our cases have involved surgery in both the NHS and the private sector, and include issues such as:-

  • surgical equipment, such as swabs, left inside the patient
  • surgical injury, such as tissue and nerve damage
  • perforation of organs
  • consent issues
  • removal of incorrect organs and other body parts
  • poor post operative care including mismanagement of conditions such as haemorrhage, respiratory complications, DVT
  • wound infection and inadequate treatment
  • injuries whilst being transported or handled in the theatre whilst under general anaesthetic
  • anaesthetic awareness

The team is used to dealing with cases involving pre-operative issues, such as consent; accidents that occur during the operation; and post operative conditions, such as lack of monitoring and prescribing errors. Most operations take place under a general anaesthetic, and so a patient has no recall as to what went wrong. It takes specialist knowledge to ascertain whether mistakes may have been made, by assessing the medical records and the outcome of the treatment.
