Government review findings published on the use of vaginal mesh and other drugs on women

A Government review, published by The Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review, chaired by Baroness Julia Cumberlege, has stressed how many women who voiced concerns regarding vaginal mesh procedure complications were dismissed as having ‘women’s problems’.

The review investigated the use of vaginal mesh, epilepsy drug sodium valproate and hormone pregnancy test Primodos, and found that many patients have faced harm from unsafe medicines and medical devices due to a healthcare system that is ‘disjointed, siloed, unresponsive and defensive.’

The review concluded by calling for an apology to families, that a patient safety commissioner is appointed to be their port of call, with a redress agency for those harmed, as well as specialist centres.

As regards to the vaginal mesh procedures the review found that ‘thousands’ of women could have been spared from complications following vaginal mesh surgery. Baroness Cumberlege commented that ‘Much of this suffering was entirely avoidable, caused and compounded by failings in the health system itself.’

Women who underwent vaginal mesh surgery have had varying results, whilst some have benefitted some have been left in agony.
